"A stable day sailer that can also actively be raced."
The Lido 14 is the one of the most successful crossover dinghies
built. In production since 1958 by W.D. Schock, this boat, constructed
of fiberglass, functions as a great day sailer. Its 6 feet of width
provides good stability and weight carrying characteristics for
the couple who want to load their children aboard for an afternoon
of sailing. At the same time, the boat is raced as a one-design
dinghy with an active and dedicated class following. In 1997, the
deck and cockpit of the boat were redesigned providing greater comfort
and safety through enhanced floatation. The new deck was incorporated
on all hull numbers above 6000, thus leading to the designation
of a 6000 series Lido 14 as opposed to the older Classic. The new
deck design also provides greater stability at the front of the
centerboard trunk. In the Classic Lido, a class allowed change stabilizes
the front of the trunk through braces to the seats. The boat is
very easy and quick to rig. Its 310 lbs. weight makes it easy to
trailer and ramp launch. The boat is quite dry to sail for a 14
footer.
For the sailor looking for a stable day sailer, which can also
actively be raced, the Lido 14 remains one of the most cost effective,
and enduring, solutions in the sailing dinghy classes.
